The Martha Stewart Collection

If you like the Martha Stewart Collection, you may have been disappointed when it became a Macy's exclusive. I know I was, since the line was a very popular with my Amazon customers. Well, now in a separate deal, Macy's has contracted with Amazon to handle their online sales.

If you are new to Amazon, you will find that these "third party" sales are essentially the same as direct Amazon sales. The main difference you will notice is that the Amazon search function may include extraneous items, and it may be harder to browse through categories to see what is available.

Of course Amazon still carries Martha Stewart Books, and even has a Martha Stewart Bibliography page, in addition to the popular Martha Stewart Magazines and Martha Stewart DVDs. What has changed is that the Martha Stewart Collection products have moved into the Macy's Store, which makes them harder to search for. Furthermore, it is virtually impossible to find the Martha Stewart Bed & Bath Sale Items, the Martha Stewart Dining & Entertaining Sale Items, or the Martha Stewart Kitchen Sale Items without considerable drilling down. This is also true for the Martha Stewart Clearance Items.

The Links below are a site map for Macy's Martha Stewart pages, which require considerable drilling down to reach (except from here!) If you like Macy's but don't have a store near you, you might want to subscribe to this blog, since I am planning similar articles for other popular Macy's departments and brands.

Popular Magazine Subscriptions @ Amazon.com

This is the one of a series of quick articles on popular products from Amazon.com. Of course, the most obvious measure of popularity is Amazon sales rank, the default listing order of Amazon's aStores. That order is already represented in the search engine listings, at least in theory. These items are ones that I have actually sold.

The idea here is that these items are popular enough that someone would buy them, but not so popular that they are widely listed elsewhere. Though this approach may seem wildly random, it is very likely that if someone bought these before, someone else might want to buy them in the future. Perhaps they are just what you're looking for!

How Google Sees My Site(s) - I

Google isn't necessarily the best search engine; in fact I'd rate it third out of a field of four. Nonetheless, a recent survey showed that Google accounted for 58% of all the searches performed on the Internet. Obviously, Google's opinion is important to any webmaster whose goal is to attract viewers to their content. The following Amazon.com products are those that Google believes are the most "significant" ones listed in my Amazon aStores.

Google's idea of significance isn't necessarily mine -- or yours. My goal is to help shoppers find what they're looking for -- a task which should correlate pretty well with sales (which, of course, is my real goal.) Google's evaluation is based on a number of mostly irrelevant data, which produces some fairly odd results. (Similar results can be found with Live Search and Yahoo! )

Here are a couple hundred products Google thinks you'll be interested in. Frankly, none of them have been big sellers for me, but that could change. In any case, I've placed them into the appropriate subcategory aStores, which should help customers and indexing 'bots alike.

William F. Buckley, Jr. (1925 - 2008)

Author and political commentator William F. Buckley, Jr. was found dead in the study of his Stamford, Connecticut home yesterday, apparently of natural causes. The sixth of ten children of Irish-Catholic lawyer and oil baron William F. Buckley, Sr. the 82-year-old Buckley served as a second lietenant during World War II. At war's end, he studied political science, history and economics at Yale where he was a star debater, joined the secret Skull and Bones society, and served as the chairman of the Yale Daily News.

After graduating with honors in 1950, Buckley wrote God and Man at Yale, the first of what would be over fifty books on a variety of subjects, and served briefly in the C.I.A. and as an editor of The American Mercury in 1951 & 1952. After leaving The Mercury over its percieved anti-semitic tendencies, Buckley founded conservative magazine The National Review in 1955. While at the helm of The Review, Buckley became known for his fusion of American conservative politics with libertarian economics, and had an acknowledged influence on such conservative icons as Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.

In 1965, Buckley began a syndicated column, "On the Right", which at its height ran in 320 newspapers. To those outside the conservative movement, Buckley is best known as the host of 1504 installments of the PBS series Firing Line. Unlike the current crop of "conservative" pundits -- the Bill O'Reillys, Rush Limbaughs, and Ann Coulters of the world -- Buckley generally eschewed ad hominem attacks (except for his uncharacteristic feud with Gore Vidal) relying instead on a journalist's regard for facts and a debater's skill in logic. Nor was he a lock-step Republican -- deviating from the party line on such subjects as drug legalization, smoking bans, and the Iraq War. Although one might not always have agreed with Buckley (he was after all more conservative than most) one had to respect his erudite, principled, and internally consistent positions which contributed greatly to the nation's political dialogue and will be sorely missed.

Emergency Gifts from Amazon.com

It doesn't happen every year -- but when it does, it seems like only yesterday. You've made your list, checked it twice, fought the crowds and brought home the bacon. Then, suddenly, somebody falls through the cracks. Maybe an old friend comes to town unexpectedly. Perhaps you know someone who's been on hard times lately and you know they'd feel bad if you got them something and they didn't have something for you...

There are so many ways it could happen, I won't go on. The point is: its Christmas Day and you're a gift short. A lot of people keep a couple of "generic" gifts on hand for just such emergencies, but it's too late for that now. What to do? (Alas!)

Amazon.com can help. Their online store is open all day Christmas, and there are quite a few "instant delivery" items available:

The first (and most obvious) is the ubiquitous Gift Card. These have gained wide acceptance in recent years, and many would actually rather pick out their own gift. Amazon gift cards are about as good as they come, since they never expire, generally include free shipping on orders over $25, and are redeemable for such a wide variety of products (NOT just books!)

You can send them via e-mail or with a Free E-Card, which can personalize your gift a bit.

Another option is a nice magazine subscription. These aren't actually delivered until they are published, but you can get a nice card notifying the recipient that a subscription has been started in their name.

Finally, Amazon has downloadable items for the digerati on your list. Mp3 music, Unbox Digital Video, and Amazon Shorts are all great gifts. For those who already have Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device Amazon currently features over 90,000 Kindle Books. (All of these items can be purchased with Amazon's Gift Cards, which might be a convenient way to handle the transfer.)

Amazon Widget Links

Amazon.com provides a number of innovative methods for linking to their product pages based on the content of a page, a visitor's Amazon browsing history, and other factors. Several of these "widgets" can be seen in the left-hand margin of this page.

That is, they can be seen by typical web-browsers that have javascript, and in some cases cookies, enabled. Web spiders ignore them completely. That's a shame.

To correct this, herewith is a hodge-podge of popular Amazon products gleaned from these Amazon widgets:

Magazine Mania

Amazon.com features a broad range of magazines by subscription. As with other top-level categories, Amazon's classification and subcategories make sense from one point of view, but may hold some surprises for those who want to "drill down" to a more specific category. That is the primary function of this catablog.

Here are Amazon.com's Top Magazine categories:
