Women's Athletic & Outdoor Shoe Categories @ Amazon.com

Once the choice of athletic shoes was simple: high-top or low-top, black or white. Since then an imposing variety of specialized footwear has been developed to improve performance, comfort and safety by better supporting and cushioning the foot. Any coach will tell you that good shoes are essential in any sport, but your own assesment of your particular needs will tell you if you need -- for example, a specifically designated lacrosse shoe, or if the wider selection of the more general turf shoes will provide a better "fit."

If you participate in a number of athletic activities without really specializing in one or two, you might be interested in a good cross-training shoe. While Amazon's categories are often helpful in narrowing your range of choices to a mangeable level, they are only as good as the methods used to assign products to those categories. In the case of some of the more specialized footwear especially, you may get better results searching for a particular brand or keyword in a broader category.

Women's Athletic Shoe Brands @ Amazon.com

Amazon.com's hierarchy of categories and subcategories are usually a big help in locating the products you want to buy. Once in a while, though, so many inappropriate products are included (e.g. in "Fishing Waders") and/or so many appropriate products are omitted that you're really better off taking a different tack.

Since Amazon is constantly updating and improving their listings, you may find the Women's Athletic Footwear subcategories very useful. As of this posting, however, in some cases you'd be better advised to use these brand-name searches:

Popular Sporting Goods @ Amazon.com

This is the one of a series of quick articles on popular products from Amazon.com. Of course, the most obvious measure of popularity is Amazon sales rank, the default listing order of Amazon's aStores. That order is already represented in the search engine listings, at least in theory. These items are ones that I have actually sold.

The idea here is that these items are popular enough that someone would buy them, but not so popular that they are widely listed elsewhere. Though this approach may seem wildly random, it is very likely that if someone bought these before, someone else might want to buy them in the future. Perhaps they are just what you're looking for!

How Google Sees My Site(s) - III

Google isn't necessarily the best search engine; in fact I'd rate it third out of a field of four. Nonetheless, a recent survey showed that Google accounted for 58% of all the searches performed on the Internet. Obviously, Google's opinion is important to any webmaster whose goal is to attract viewers to their content. The following Amazon.com products are those that Google believes are the most "significant" ones listed in my Amazon aStores.

Google's idea of significance isn't necessarily mine -- or yours. My goal is to help shoppers find what they're looking for -- a task which should correlate pretty well with sales (which, of course, is my real goal.) Google's evaluation is based on a number of mostly irrelevant data, which produces some fairly odd results. (Similar results can be found with Live Search and Yahoo! )

Here are a couple hundred products Google thinks you'll be interested in. Frankly, none of them have been big sellers for me, but that could change. In any case, I've placed them into the appropriate subcategory aStores, which should help customers and indexing 'bots alike.

Congratulations LSU Tigers

Congratulations to the LSU Tigers on their 38-24 upset of the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, and on winning the coveted BCS trophy. I'm going to try to avoid some controversy by staying away from the "National Championship" label. (O.K. I know that will ruffle some feathers in Baton Rouge, but c'mon!)

The whole "National Championship" brouhaha was cooked up by the creation of The Associated Press Poll in 1934 -- a public-relations master stroke that used our neurotic national obsession with crowning a winner to sell A LOT of papers. It was obviously a beauty contest, and only the winners paid much attention to it, but college football wasn't the multi-million dollar business it is today.

The genius of the BCS system is that it preserves all the long-standing arrangements between the various bowl organizations, NCAA conferences, the AP, the upstart USA Today Coaches Poll, and so on -- while neatly carving out a piece of the College Football Pie for themselves. The claim of being a "National Championship" reminds me of Bimarck's comment on sausages and the law, though. The BCS own website links to an article from the Kansas City Star: The BCS Works, which (unfortunately) has Missouri and West Virginia in the final game.

None of this is meant to take anything away from LSU, or Ohio State either, for that matter. The BCS bowl was a fine game between two great teams that had nothing to do with creating the BCS formula that landed them in the match. It's just that in this year of college football "upsets," (Vegas generally had a good year picking winners) there are a lot of teams who feel slighted, and some of them have pretty good cases.
