Popular Consumer Electronics @ Amazon.com I

This is the one of a series of quick articles on popular products from Amazon.com. Of course, the most obvious measure of popularity is Amazon sales rank, the default listing order of Amazon's aStores. That order is already represented in the search engine listings, at least in theory. These items are ones that I have actually sold.

The idea here is that these items are popular enough that someone would buy them, but not so popular that they are widely listed elsewhere. Though this approach may seem wildly random, it is very likely that if someone bought these before, someone else might want to buy them in the future. Perhaps they are just what you're looking for!

Amazon's Amazing Kindle Wireless Document Reader

Compared to the hoopla surrounding the release of Apple Computer's iPhone, Amazon.com's new Kindle Wireless Reading Device was virtually a non-event. Nonetheless, initial demand for this latest must-have geek accessory exceeded all expectations, creating a waiting list for the product that is only beginning to be addressed.

Browsing through Amazon's Kindle Store, you'll begin to see why. First, Amazon has partnered with Sprint to create their own Whispernet wireless telephone network which is free to Kindle owners. That feature alone allows the device to pay for itself in only a few months. On the other hand, you may prefer Using Kindle with Your Computer, saving a local copy of you digital content. Either way, your content remains accessible in Your Media Library, and you can always Manage Your Kindle Subscriptions online.

Amazon.com's Most Popular Gifts: MP3 Players

Mp3 is a "lossy" format, which explains how these tiny players can hold so many hours of content. It doesn't explain the popularity of audiophile extras which purport to reproduce sound quality that simply isn't available. That being said, there really isn't much difference in sound quality among these choices.

As with other stereo systems, speakers (in this case generally headphones) are an important determinant of sound quality. A good set of headphones are often a reasonable upgrade. With the smaller (and obviously cooler) ear-bud style fit is important, so look for a small-diameter set with additional ear adapters. Although more expensive isn't always better, high quality headphones aren't cheap.

A player's feature set is much more significant. The "best" MP3 player is apparently a more expensive version of the same brand as one's friends have (generally Apple, but check to be sure. Other brands have equally adamant adherents.) If you like your music ear-splittingly loud (and who doesn't?) you'll want to look into batteries and chargers too.

Amazon.com publishes a series of gift guides, which change over time and may even disappear altogether. These snapshots are an excellent indication of what products are popular on any given day. While the content of the guide may vary, these MP3 Players should be around for a long time...
